Oshiomohole meets Buhari, sacks Gulak committee on Imo primary

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday, said the party leadership had sacked the Ahmed Gulak-led committee for the party’s governorship primary in Imo State.

Oshiomhole said this in an interview with State House correspondents after a meeting he had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

There was confusion over the state of affairs concerning the All Progressives Congress’ Imo State governorship primary held in Owerri, the state capital, on Monday.

The Chairman of the committee, Ahmed Gulak, told reporters in Abuja, on Tuesday, that the exercise was held peacefully and that Senator Hope Uzodima won the election and was declared a winner after polling 423,895 votes to defeat eight other aspirants including Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu.
However, the APC National Working Committee, in a statement signed by the acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, announced the indefinite suspension of the exercise. It, however, gave no reason for the action.

Gulak said his committee conducted a peaceful exercise which produced Senator Hope Uzodimma as the party’s candidate for the 2019 governorship election for Imo State but that soon after the exercise, a team of policemen with others stormed the hotel where they were lodged.
“The truth does not require supporters club to stand, it has its legs, it has its heads and we will do just that.”
When asked whether the NWC of the APC was in support of the Lagos primary, Oshiomhole said, “Everything that is being done is done under the control of and supervision and directions of the NWC.
“Not too long ago, a political party just four years ago had only one form that was available for presidential convention even there were other people including people who were saying there should be women presidential aspirants and the party had only one form and you remember they went on gathering signatures of faceless Nigerians who were purported to be asking him to do a second term.
“But here, I am proudly saying that two, three days ago, you saw Nigerians across the 36 states including the FCT queuing up to nominate their candidate and saying that they want the sitting President to run for the second tenure. So this is not a petition by faceless people.”

Answering questions on how the party planned to reconcile states like Rivers, Delta and Cross River with parallel primaries and candidates, Oshiomhole said everything must be done according to the rules of the party.

But the former Edo State Governor who said he was at the Presidential Villa to brief Buhari on the developments in the party, said the results being paraded as the result of the Imo governorship primary was fake hence the need to sack the committee.

He expressed the hope that the process would be completed before the weekend.

Oshiomhole said the party’s National Working Committee was in charge of the Lagos primary and that every situation had been put under control.

He also said the party would not recognise parallel primaries in any state.

On Imo State, Oshiomhole said, “The case of Imo State is not too good news for today but not surprising; they have to learn to begin to comply with rules.

“They have two fake results and we adopt both two fake results, none of them is genuine and we will disband the committee and appoint a fresh committee, an electoral panel that will conduct a transparent direct primary that reflects the will of members of APC in Imo State regardless of the interest and the powers that were behind any of the groups.

“The truth does not require supporters club to stand, it has its legs, it has its heads and we will do just that.”

When asked whether the NWC of the APC was in support of the Lagos primary, Oshiomhole said, “Everything that is being done is done under the control of and supervision and directions of the NWC.

Answering questions on how the party planned to reconcile states like Rivers, Delta and Cross River with parallel primaries and candidates, Oshiomhole said everything must be done according to the rules of the party.

He said, “There is no parallel, we are not an amorphous organisation. We are a structured organisation; we are governed by rules that represent the contract among members of the All Progressives Congress as clearly stated in our constitution.

“It is the source of our authority and power and also obligations and duties to do what we have to do to ensure that the affairs of the party is conducted not according to the whims and caprices of any individual but based on the decisions of the organs of the party and based on the rules of the party.
We have applied those rules and these are the couple of things we have done that should convince any Nigerian under me to do what we are convinced about and we have never hesitated. We have the will to make decisions that in our judgement is true.
